Steve Zimmerman

Senior Associate Attorney

About

Steve Zimmerman is a Senior Associate Attorney with the Smith & Vinson Law Firm. Since 2016, Steve has built a reputation as a fierce, creative, and knowledgeable advocate in Texas courtrooms, focused primarily on high-stakes felony cases.

Before entering the legal profession, Steve earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University in 2009. He began his career as a Video Journalist with KWTX-TV in Waco, Texas, covering major stories across Central Texas—a role that honed both his investigative skills and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. This role also inspired Steve to attend law school.

In 2012, Steve began his legal education at South Texas College of Law in Houston. There, he distinguished himself as a varsity member of both the mock trial and moot court teams, competing nationally and sharpening the courtroom skills that would define his career. During law school, he interned with the Harris County and Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Offices. Steve was also awarded the CALI Award for achieving the highest grade in his class for legal writing and research.

After graduating law school and passing the Texas Bar Exam, Steve joined the Brazos County District Attorney’s Office in 2016, where he prosecuted and tried felony cases of all levels. He also developed and managed the county’s first ever pre-trial diversion program which led to the diversion of over 500 felony criminal defendants away from the criminal justice system.

In 2023, he transitioned to the North Hill Country Public Defender’s Office, where he represented clients facing serious felony criminal charges. Drawing from his experience as a prosecutor, Steve provided zealous and strategic defense for those in need, ensuring his clients received the vigorous representation they deserved.

Now at Smith and Vinson, Steve continues to leverage his background on both sides of the courtroom to defend his clients with determination, skill, and integrity.
