What to Expect When You Call Smith & Vinson Law Firm for a Personal Injury Case

|

When someone thinks about calling a law firm after an injury, a lot of unknowns hang over that first step. Who will answer? How complicated will the process feel? How will the firm treat you day to day? Our What to Expect video pulls back the curtain on how we at Smith & Vinson Law Firm handle personal injury cases from the first call through the life of a claim.

The video walks through our process in plain language and shows how we interact with clients, doctors, and insurance companies. If you want a clear picture of what it feels like to work with us, start here:

What happens when you call us

The video begins with the moment you reach out. When someone calls our firm about a personal injury matter, a receptionist answers the phone any time of day or night. That call does not disappear into voicemail or a long phone tree. The receptionist directs it to one of our partners’ cell phones.

As we explain in the video, “They're going to immediately talk to one of our receptionists 24 hours a day. And then our receptionist is going to direct that call to either my cell phone or Brad cell phone. So they're going to talk to one of the partners about their personal injury matter.”

This direct access sets the tone. From the very first conversation, you speak with someone who listens to your story, understands injury claims, and helps you understand what comes next.

Getting set up without extra stress

Once we decide to move forward together, we focus on making the setup as simple as possible. In the video, we talk about how we onboard new clients and organize the case behind the scenes.

“Everything in our firm is electronic. We try to make things super simple and easy for the client because they're going through a lot. So we want to make things simple. We want to make things easy. We want to get them onboarded and then we want to handle it from there.”

That approach reflects how we run our office day to day. We rely on electronic systems so you do not have to shuffle paper or make repeated trips just to sign forms. You can focus on healing while we manage the legal side and keep your file moving.

Empathy for you, not for insurance companies

The video also shows how we look at the human side of an injury case. We hear hard stories from people who often face one of the most challenging times in their lives. We acknowledge that reality and respond with compassion and clear guidance.

As we share on camera, “There are a lot of sad stories. They're going through one of the most difficult times of their life, and I have a lot of empathy for them. And Brad has a lot of empathy for them. But we don't have a lot of empathy for the insurance companies.”

That line sums up a core part of our culture. We aim to support our clients with understanding and patience. At the same time, we approach insurance companies with firm resolve and a focus on what the claim truly calls for.

Guidance on treatment and medical bills

For many people, worries about medical bills start right after the accident. The video spends time on how we address that concern. We talk about the reality that many injured people need treatment but feel anxious about running up charges they cannot pay right away.

In the video, we explain that our team stays in communication with clients and their doctors: “They're usually in medical treatment. They're seeing medical doctors and we're guiding that process. We're in communications with those doctors and we're in communications with our clients throughout the process.”

We also describe how we work with providers who accept letters of protection in some cases. A letter of protection lets many injured people get medical care now, with payment deferred until the case resolves. As we note, this can mean “they would not have to pay for any of their medical bills unless their case settles,” and if the claim resolves, a portion of the settlement can go toward those bills.

This part of the video gives a clear, practical example of how our daily work reaches beyond forms and court dates. We stay involved while you receive care and help you understand how treatment and the claim fit together.

How we approach settlement and trial

The closing section of the video explains what can happen as a case moves forward. We talk through two main paths in a personal injury claim: working toward a settlement or taking the case to trial.

We describe the first step this way: “The first step is to try to work out a settlement with the insurance company.” We also explain that our trial background shapes those discussions: “Based on our trial experience and the insurance company's knowledge of that trial experience, we usually are able to get to a settlement agreement.”

When an insurance company does not put forward what we believe reflects the value of a claim, we discuss the next step: “If we're not hearing from the insurance company what we know that our client deserves, then we will 100% go to trial and go to bat for our clients.”

In one of the most vivid moments in the video, we compare trial to a fight in the ring: “Going to trial. To me is like being in the boxing ring, right? The moment that the trial begins, I'm going to do anything and everything I possibly can do to win. That is within the rules and is ethical. But once the fight starts, it's on.”

That analogy helps viewers see how seriously we take courtroom work. It also explains why trial readiness matters even if your case never reaches a jury. As we say, “The reason you hire a trial lawyer is because the insurance companies know if you're willing to go to trial, then you're willing to go all the way. And they don't want to take that risk. So they're much more willing to work out the settlement.”

The video closes with a practical takeaway: “If you don't have someone with that reputation, you're not going to get a fair and equitable result.” That statement speaks to how our internal culture of preparation and willingness to try cases shapes the outcomes we pursue for clients.
